The Wytheville Fire Department (WFD) was established prior to 1835 and organized in 1851 at which time it was an all volunteer department. Since that time, it has become a combination department with six full-time career firefighters and a roster of twenty-five volunteers. The WFD protects approximately 13,400 citizens in a 91.14 square mile response area. The ISO (Insurance Services Rating) for the department is a 6 in the Town limits and 9 in the portion of the County that they respond to fire calls. The WFD provides Fire Prevention Education Programs throughout the year to schools, businesses, churches, civic groups and nursing homes. If you would like to schedule a class, call 276-223-3302. The WFD also hosts an annual Fire Prevention Parade which is held the second Saturday in October during Fire Prevention Week.

The Wytheville Fire Department also participates in the Virginia Fire Incident Reporting System which is a part of the National Fire Incident Reporting System. Every call the WFD answers is entered into a National database where statistics are compiled. The average response time is 3-7 minutes. The WFD answers approximately 200 calls a year.

Among the apparatus that the department has in active service include a 2000 Ford F550 Brush Truck, 1993 Ford F350 Utility Truck, 1991 American LaFrance 75-ft Aerial, and a 1978 American LaFrance Pumper.
