The Wytheville E-911 Communications Center began operation in March 1993. The dispatch area is 14' by 13' or 182 square feet. It has it's own HVAC (heat, ventilation, and air-conditioning) system along with a back-up generator. The location of the room is such that the dispatchers can monitor the street and anyone who enters the Emergency Services Building from the front or rear entrances. There are two dispatch stations that are equipped with new CML Sentinel 911 phones (2 wireless), touch screen Zetron Radio consoles and Mercom voice recording system. The E-911 system has 4 E-911 lines and 3 non-emergency lines. The system also has TDD capabilities for the hearing impaired.
The Town has 6 Dispatchers who are the primary communications staff. They field calls, dispatch police, fire, or rescue depending on the type of call taken. The dispatch center staff is supplemented by 6 paid firefighters, 3 Investigators and 7 police officers that are certified to dispatch by DCJS (Department of Criminal Justice Services).
The dispatch office serves as the Public Safety Postal Service receiving and dispersing the mail to the police, fire, rescue and some of the administrative offices of the Town of Wytheville.
