William J. "Bill" Scott
Bill has been with the department since August 24, 1992. He attended the Cardinal Criminal Academy for Animal Control Officers. He has also attended a number of conventions pertaining to Animal Control. He is certified in Rodent Control, Animal Euthanasia, Shelter Operations, and Firearms.
The animal control officer's resonsibilities include taking care of dogs and cats, making sure they have their shots and tags, catching the ones that are running at large, checking on animals that are being improperly cared for as far as their housing, food and water is concerned. He also picks up dead animals on the town streets and right of ways. If requested, he will set a trap for skunks, groundhogs, or opossums.
When the town decided to build a new Cat Shelter, Bill was instrumental in the planning and design of the building which began operation in December 1994. The following year he was chosen Animal Control Officer of the Year for Virginia.
In the past ten years, he has only had one year in which he did not have perfect attendance. The job of ACO is 24/7, 365 days a year. Bill says "along with the assistance of the patrol personnel, career firefighters, and town employees, the job of ACO is a very rewarding and enjoyable venture".
